Firstly, it is important to note that the Fuel Centre Of Gravity indicator indicates the centre of gravity of the fuel system, and not that of the entire aircraft. During normal flight operation, the indicators will both rest in the NOSE HEAVY position, and the centre of gravity can be checked by pressing and holding the CG CHECK button. 

This instrument would also start the register automatically during air-to-air refuelling.
